Preface
(These papers form the basis for the author’s subsequent papers “Questioning Gödel's Theorems”)
This stunning discovery is the startling culmination during the last two years of over thirty years of private, isolated, sporadic study of basic texts on the logical and philosophical foundations of mathematics.
It is a debatable tribute to Gödel's stature and authority that the years were spent more in seeking an alternative intellectual interpretation of his work (in an attempt to reconcile some of the disquieting features of his conclusions) rather than in a disciplined effort to faithfully follow, understand and recreate his line of reasoning rigorously, particularly where he had specifically indicated a possible lack of rigour [Gödel 1931 : p23 & footnote 89] .
Since the disquieting features of Gödel's reasoning and conclusions (which sustained this effort over the years) may be of interest to some, these have been outlined in the reproduction (as a final chapter) of the PREFACE to the author’s earlier collection of notes and formally unpublished papers.
The present work also owes a special debt to Dr. Chetan H. Mehta, who again played the devil’s advocate effectively and provided the impetus for isolating Gödel's tacit assumption and locating a specific counter-example.
Finally, this result would not have been achieved without the encouragement and constructive criticism in correspondence by Professor Martin Davis whose patient, and sorely tried, indulgence impelled the author towards a more thorough and rigorous study of Gödel's original paper.
